Celtel signs up 6 millionth customer – a million new customers gained since December 2004

Celtel International, the pan-African mobile communications group with operations in 13 countries, has signed up its six millionth mobile customer.

Marten Pieters, Celtel International Group Chief Executive, said:
"Passing six million customers is another terrific milestone for Celtel. Since we reached five million subscribers last December, we have increased our signing-up rate to more than 50,000 new customers per week.

“We have accelerated our rate of growth following the successful rebranding last year which underpinned our premier position across sub-Saharan Africa. We are the market leader in most of the countries in which we operate with the most noticeable growth being in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“The acquisition of Celtel by MTC will provide additional resources to enable us to continue to invest heavily in our infrastructure, to support future growth, as well as pursuing new licenses as part of our ambitious expansion programme.”
